Locked up in 1977 after a questionable trial based on recanted witness statements gotten from FBI coercion, Leonard Peltier is a Dakota, Lakota Indian and enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Chippewa.
The Dalai Lama, Mother Theresa, Nelson Mandela all have supported Peltier's freedom. Yet, even Barack Obama denied Peltier's request for Presidential Pardon.
It might be due to Peltier being a member of A.I.M known as the American Indian Movement. What did they do? The organized urban Indians and many others to fight systemic poverty, police brutality and racism. They were formed in 1968, like the African Americans, the fight for civil rights was spreading out to everyone. Perhaps his involvement in American Indian Civil rights is why even the most progressive president refused to pardon this man. Or maybe the FBI has that kind of power over our government.
